The Trailblazers

In the summer of 2012, during a residency in the artist camp of Tescani in the county of Bacau, I started a collaboration with Larisa Sitar and Stefan Tiron. Our main concern was connected with the nationalist turn that was taking place within political and cultural discourse in Romania, in general.

Images of the rustic lifestyle associated with local nationalism from the 19th century, as well as ideas such as ethnic purity and religious ideals were instrumentalized by the political power in order to counter-act the internationalist tendencies of contemporary culture, in general.

This type of discourse was mainly implemented in the media as propaganda, as funding cuts for the arts, as well as a complete institutional dismantling of the programmes supporting contemporary culture, formerly run by the Romanian Cultural Institute all over Europe and in the US.

Our approach was whimsical and naive, playing with the specific wording and with some of the images within the inventory of this discourse. Later on, these almost became the dominant textual and visual narrative in the public sphere, at least as far as political circles and festivities organised by the administration were concerned.

Statement / 2012

With the help of an eight minute video, a group of Romanian artists (Mircea Nicolae, Larisa Sitar and Stefan Tiron), lay the foundation of future Romanian art.

By adopting the suggestions put forward by the Trailblazers - as these artists chose to name themselves, a positive outcome will be observed. This way, the serious contemporary threats that aim to destroy the natural feeling of being part of the Romanian nation of those Romanians who live abroad will be completely removed.

The symbolic gestures of the Trailblazers will make a substantial contribution to the consolidation of national integrity, to the maintenance of the purity of our race, but also to building a solid future for our country.

*the video was produced by the Ephemair Association within the TranceCultural project of that year.
